Summer's Over, Boys and Girls!
September 2006 Edition
Issue 9
School

Although we're no longer "little rascals," September still means a fresh start for many of us. This issue is chock full of fall trends and events. So, sharpen those pencils, polish an apple, and get back on the bus (and we don't mean the Hamptons Jitney)!

Ice Cubes Gum

Or, should we ask, "What's sweet?" (That's the word of the era, according to Fast Company (although "cool" is always in style). These adjectives are now deemed uncool.

Speaking of sweet, the number of candy companies shrunk from 6,000 one hundred years ago to 150 today, although more than 100,000 different kinds of candy bars were introduced since 1912. Here's more candy history. (Our favorite treat at theONswitch is pictured above.)

We won't grow up...

As boomers become the "new seniors," looking young is more popular than ever. Americans spent $12.4 billion on cosmetic plastic surgery last year, a staggering 444% increase since 1997!
And, when boomers are not busy lifting their faces, they are struggling with how to work with millenials, who represent 25% of the population (versus 26% boomers). Here's some practical advice.

Zip me up and plug me in...

If you're not as smart as you'd like to be, let your wardrobe take over. Look for "smart clothing" -- garments and bags with built-in pockets for gadgets or sneakers that keep you hopping.

Not enough vacation this summer?

Or are you simply daydreaming about your next one? Travel trends we've spotted...

  1. Family-oriented spa and exercise vacations
  2. Croatia as a hot destination
  3. Eco-tourism and green resorts

If you can't get away...

...at least get to sleep (especially on "school nights"). According to Cornell Professor Dr. James B. Maas, author of Power Sleep, most of us are over-tired, which results in poor performance and bad health. Impossible to get a full eight hours? Dr. Maas will teach you how to power-nap too!
