Make Their Job (and Yours) Easier
With the new additions to theONswitch team, and Nancy's recent contributions to the book, "How to Survive Your First Job" , there has been a lot of buzz around the topic of new-comers in the office. College interns and recent grads have a lot to offer, but it can be a challenge to play the role of both business owner and teacher.
Here are some tips that may help:
· Over-communicate: Ensure that your interns and "entry-levelers" always have the opportunity to ask questions. E-mail them personalized to-do lists and provide feedback.
· Meet face-to-face regularly: Set up weekly, short one-on-one sessions or group meetings to keep everyone on track.
· Instill a "notebook mentality": Set a precedent that employees should have a notebook on them at all times, allowing newcomers to organize the sometimes overwhelming amount of new information and assignments they are given.
· Offer opportunities for observation: Provide entry-level employees with the chance to sit in on meetings so they can familiarize themselves with appropriate meeting etiquette and client relations.
· Be patient: Stay on top of your business's main agenda, but be supportive of the fact that the work your interns are doing is often completely new to them.
· Inspire excitement: Find creative and spontaneous ways to keep your new workers motivated, such as an off-site team-building meeting or a fun office blog strictly for employee jokes!
